Description: Pekalongan Mangrove is a project targeting endangered villages or areas located on coastal lines in Pekalongan. This project is a sustainable project organized by GREAT in cooperation with local communities called Banawa Sekar to answer the needs of preserving the coastal side of Pekalongan. Pekalongan City is one of the directed affected by global climate change among many of islands in the world. The project is preserving natural diversity and sea shore from erosion because of significantly mangrove cutting in the 70’s-80s along with strong waves from the ocean.
Type of Work: Planting mangroves, harvesting mangroves seeds, seedling mangroves. Sharing environmental education with local people and children Conducting school visits and universities for environmental education Running a green campaign in the city center, managing the mangrove fruits to be drinks or foods, and promoting it. Exchange culture between local people and volunteers Learning about Mangroves Learning how to make mangrove syrups
Study Theme: Volunteers will learn about the impact of climate change on the coastal area such as abrasion, land subsidence, the importance of mangrove forests, products made of mangroves, and local cultures.
Accommodation: Volunteers stay in the local people's house with shared bedrooms and bathroom. Self-cooking in the kitchen but sometimes also buying food from local shops. There is no Wifi and no air-conditioner, a sleeping bag is needed in case you want extra protection from mosquito bites.
